Nike and University of Oregon have teamed up with OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to help defeat childhood cancer. On September 9, Oregon defeated Nebraska wearing a new high-performance uniform designed by three young cancer survivors. These Doernbecher patients collaborated with Nike designers and student athletes to create a uniform and fan gear to honor childhood cancer awareness month. The project is an exciting expansion of Doernbecher Freestyle, a partnership between Nike and Doernbecher that has raised nearly $17 million for the hospital over the past 14 years. All proceeds from the sales of this collection will support Doernbecher's pediatric cancer fund.
MEET THE DESIGNERS
Ethan, Sophia and Joe beat cancer. They know what it's like to fight — and win. Their uniform, shoe and apparel designs reflect their struggles, triumphs and dreams.
On September 9, the University of Oregon football team will hit the field in a uniform designed by three young cancer survivors. From the helmet to the cleats, every part tells a story.
Thanks to major advances in clinical and scientific research, more children than ever before will survive their cancer diagnoses. However, cancer still remains the leading cause of death from disease among children in the United States.
Each year since 2004, a group of patients who have each faced serious illness have been invited to design a Nike shoe for Doernbecher Freestyle. Apparel was added in 2013. By sharing their stories, these young patients help other kids at the same hospital that changed their lives. Nike donates all proceeds from Doernbecher Freestyle to support clinical care and research and cover the cost of care for families most in need.
This remarkable partnership is expanding in 2017 to include University of Oregon in special effort to help defeat childhood cancer. Doernbecher is ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals in pediatric oncology (U.S. News & World Report).
In October, six additional patient-designers will reveal their 2017 Doernbecher Freestyle collections.
