Diagnosis: congenital heart defect, heart transplant
Ethan Ellis is a mile-a-minute guy with a passion for basketball. Despite six open-heart surgeries (three of them at Doernbecher) to treat his congenital heart defect, Ethan has managed to maintain his upbeat attitude. He recently received a brand-new heart and can’t wait to get back on the court.
Ethan’s dream is to be an NBA point guard…for any team except the Utah Jazz.
“I can’t think of another patient I’ve taken care of who I would be more thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the Freestyle program. Ethan has had six open-heart surgeries and he’s such a wonderful, vibrant teenager. He loves playing basketball even though he has hypoplastic left heart syndrome. He is eloquent, he is an active participant in his own health care and he LOVES sneakers. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with!”
–Christina Ronai, MD, nominated Ethan for the Freestyle program.
